It may be a good sign for the economy, but it is also a good sign for foodies: across Hampton Roads, a number of restaurants has either opened or changed owners, and a venerable area restaurateur is putting the final touches on a second eatery. Todd Jurich's 21st Century Burger Bar just opened in Rudee's Inlet at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront, offering a number of upmarket burgers, fries and milkshakes, along with a few other delish dishes. The space is open and inviting, with wrap-around windows on two sides offering outstanding views of the marina, as well as patio seating. A soothing color scheme with blonde wood and frosted glass accents is the backdrop for a menu that includes locally-sourced meats (and seafood) sandwiched between housebaked buns.

It's fashionable in more urban locales for top chefs to veer from foie gras and truffles and turn their attention to that most pedestrian of foods: the humble hamburger. Danny Meyer has his New York City Shake Shacks. Daniel Boulud dishes burgers at his DBGB Kitchen Bar in the Bowery. Tidewater joins in this weekend with the scheduled opening of Todd Jurich's 21st Century Burgerbar down at the Rudee Inlet docks. Yesterday Jurich, one of the area's most respected chefs and restaurateurs, greeted a who's who of area foodies that trickled in for a preview of the place. “I wanted to do something where I didn't have to worry about Wine Spectator awards,” Jurich said, referring to his award-winning Todd Jurich's Bistro in downtown Norfolk.

Todd Jurich's 21st Century Burger Bar opens in a couple of weeks; the date should be in early June and already folks are talking about the gourmet offerings featuring grass-fed beef. The restaurant will be at Rudee Inlet, between Big Sam's and Rudee's. Upscale burgers with toppings like Virginia goat cheese, balsamic-glazed red onions, shaved truffles and white soy-grilled shitakes are to be augmented with proposed sides like spoonbread hushputties, beer-battered bacon, duck fat fries and fried dill pickles. Oh yeah, expect shakes, too.

BRING ON THE BURGERS, BUT NOT JUST ANY BURGERS

Todd Jurich's 21st Century Burger Bar opens in early June at Rudee Inlet and will feature gourmet offerings and grass-fed beef. Upscale burgers will have toppings like Virginia goat cheese, balsamic-glazed red onions, shaved truffles and white soy-grilled shiitakes. Proposed sides are spoonbread hushpuppies, beer-battered bacon, duck-fat fries and fried dill pickles. Award-winning chef Richard Boone, who announced his resignation from Sonoma Wine Bar & Bistro last week, will helm the kitchen. As a side note, Boone's longtime sous chef, Mackenzie Hess, will take over at Sonoma.
